Can I Work as a Locum NCHD in Ireland?
To work as a locum doctor in Ireland, including in NCHD (SHO/ Registrar) roles, you must hold the correct immigration permission. Only doctors with a Stamp 4 or Stamp 1G visa are eligible to work as locums.
What Are Stamp 4 and Stamp 1G Visas?
- Stamp 4 allows you to live and work in Ireland without needing an employment permit, giving you the freedom to work with any employer or take up locum roles.
- Stamp 1G is typically granted to those who have completed studies or are transitioning from a Critical Skills Employment Permit, and may also allow locum work depending on individual circumstances.
Doctors who begin their career in Ireland on a Critical Skills Employment Permit or General Employment Permit may become eligible for Stamp 4 after two years of continuous employment in eligible posts (e.g. SHO, Registrar, Consultant).
Once you obtain a Stamp 4 or Stamp 1G:
- Global Medics can help you access flexible locum opportunities across hospitals nationwide.
- You’ll benefit from greater career freedom and a wider range of roles—both temporary and permanent.
