Private indemnity cover is required for all GP clinics in Ireland given it is a private service however, many of our HSE clients including IPS and addiction services do not require locum GPs to hold their own indemnity, you will be indemnified by the HSE itself during your locum shifts.
+ Do I need to pay the agency anything to sign up?
No. Registration with us is completely free.
+ Do I have to commit to a certain number of shifts per month?
No. You choose when and how often you want to work.
+ What are the rates for a locum GP?
Locum rates vary from client to client for GP jobs, some pay on an hourly rate, others at a flat session rate (3-4hours). Get in touch with our GP consultants for more information.
+ How do I get notified of available locums?
- Daily texts are sent within minutes of Global Medics receiving shifts.
- Weekly emails listing all jobs available across every specialty and location.
+ How do I book shifts?
- You will have a dedicated team for your specialty.
- Simply call, email, or WhatsApp your consultant with the shift you want
- Your CV is sent straight to the hospital for approval.
- Once booked, you will receive your contract and timesheet to bring on shift.
+ Will I get paid weekly or monthly?
We run a weekly payroll service. Email your signed timesheet to your consultant each week. We will chase HR approval, so you do not have to.
+ What documents do I need to work as a locum?
You will receive full 1 to 1 support from your consultant and a dedicated compliance officer who will guide you through every step of the registration process.
+ How long does it take to register as a locum?
Garda Vetting takes approximately 3 weeks, but it can take longer.
We always recommend submitting this first so we can gather your documents while it is processing, ensuring you are ready to start booking shifts as soon as it clears.
+ Do I need Garda Vetting even if I already work in an Irish hospital?
Yes. It is a legal requirement in Ireland that you are vetted with each individual employer you work with.
+ Can I choose only certain locations (e.g., Dublin, Cork, rural)?
Yes. You can specify exactly where you want to work.
+ What type of shifts are available?
Days, nights, weekends, and on call shifts are all available depending on the hospital.
+ How far in advance are shifts usually released?
This varies by hospital, some release shifts 1-2 months in advance, others on a weekly or daily basis, all of which can be booked immediately.
+ Can I request long term bookings at a single hospital?
Yes. Long term locum are available and can be requested through your consultant.
+ Do I need General Practitioner experience before applying for locums?
Yes. Our clients look for General Practitioners who have previous experience working as a GP in Ireland or the UK before applying for locum work.
+ Are travel expenses reimbursed?
This depends on the hospital or clinics own policy. We will always let you know in advance if expenses are covered.
+ Do I need IMC Specialist Registration to work as a GP in Ireland?
No. It is not an essential requirement to hold specialist registration to work as a locum GP however, we do help support our locums in their career progression towards specialist registration through NCHD hospital work experience and assisting with training pathways for the IMG Rural GP programme and GP Trainee scheme.
