This suburb is located within the City of Mitcham in the greater Adelaide region, approximately 7km south of the Adelaide city centre. The area is planned as a garden suburb: it is known for wide, tree-lined streets, presentable post-war bungalow homes, rounded streets corners, and lots of manicured, well-maintained open space. In 2000, the suburb was declared a State Heritage Area. Some might described it as a tight knit community - it has an active residents' association, a historical society, RSL, senior citizens club, and a number of churches. There is a Gardens football club, bowling club, croquet club, netball club, tennis club, lawn tennis club, BMX tracks, yoga sessions, as well as a Girl Guides and Scouts club.
