Position: Consultant General Physician

We are currently arranging interviews for a General Medicine Consultant to become part of a base hospital in rural Victoria. The consultant is required to provide specialist internal medicine services of the highest possible standard to all patients at the hospital.

Located 300km north west of Melbourne in a progressive rural city with a population of 19,000. This city is renowned for its natural habitat possessing many unusual windflowers and the greatest diversity of flora and fauna. In addition, this city is offering magnificent national parks and pretty waterways with fun adventures and wonderful attractions, from water sports to bushwalking, mountain biking, kayaking and rock climbing.

The Hospital:
This hospital it is a main referral centre, serving approximately 50,000 people. It has some 12,000 admissions a year and offers specialist services in anaesthetics, general medicine, surgery, obstetrics and gynaecology, on site pathology and radiology (including CT and MRI), as well as visiting services in ENT, ophthalmology, oncology, geriatrics, urology, oral surgery, orthopaedics, gastroenterology, dermatology and psychiatry.

Three Consultant Physicians provide services in general medicine. The Hospital has 25 Hospital Medical Officers and an active resident teaching program and a medical staff postgraduate education program. In addition, the Visiting Medical Staff provide teaching to medical students on rotation from various universities from time to time.
The Consultant Physicians have an active role in the Hospital's modern five-bed Intensive Care/Coronary Care Unit. Approximately 1,000 endoscopies are performed each year and facilities are available for video endoscopy and dialysis.

The Position:
As a Consultant in General Medicine you will:
- Conduct a daily morning round with HMOs and nursing staff each weekday.
- Provide detailed suggestions for the management of all patients especially those who are critically ill and complex and ensure these directions are comprehensively documented to facilitate good communication with other clinicians.
- Accept ongoing responsibility for such patients and provide active, direct and hands-on care in the emergency management of these patients.
- Provide teaching during ward rounds for students, HMOs and nursing staff.
- Handover must be done on Friday afternoons to the weekend on call physician, or any other time if the physician is going to be absent or leave.
- Participate in the on-call roster for medical patients of 1 in 3 on weekdays and weekends and 1 in 2 when other physicians are on leave. When on call at weekends, to review all patients in the medical wards including ICU or ED when requested by resident hospital medical officers or visiting medical staff.
- Be readily contactable and approachable to provide detailed advice to HMOs and senior nursing staff during the day and when on-call.
- Provide appropriate supervision of HMOs to minimise risks to patients as well as providing feedback to HMOs after reviewing patients in outpatients to enhance the continuity of the patient's care and the ongoing learning.
- Act as a clinical leader and champion in the hospital by changing clinical practise to meet best practise standards at nursing, HMO and VMO level.
- Ensure medical registrars are undertaking clinical audit that is suitable and useful for the hospital in improving the quality and safety of the care provided to medical patients. Supervise the audit and arrange for its presentation at a clinical meeting.
- Take a leadership role in planning, undertaking and measuring improvement activities, including the principles of evidence-based practice and continuous practise improvement.
- Meet regularly with the Director of Medical Services to assess progress om achieving the above objectives.

To be eligible for this role, you must have:
- A primary medical qualification registered or registrable with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians or, for an overseas- trained appointee, postgraduate clinical training, qualifications and experience in Internal Medicine which the College assesses as meeting its requirements for appointment to the position under Area of Need arrangements
- Relevant clinical experience as a Specialist in Internal Medicine.
