MCNZ Registration

To work as a medical practitioner in New Zealand you must be registered with the Medical Council of New Zealand. If you send us a copy of your CV we will be able to liaise with our contacts at the MCNZ on your behalf and accurately advise you of the registration pathways open to you:

Vocational Scope Pathway

The ‘prescribed qualification’ for this pathway is qualifications, training and experience considered by the MCNZ to be ‘equivalent to, or as satisfactory as’ the approved New Zealand or Australasian Fellowship, Diploma or Certificate.

Generally speaking, if you have completed specialist training in the UK, Ireland, Australia, Belgium, Netherlands, the USA or Canada then your qualification is considered partially comparable to New Zealand.

Competent Authority Pathway (General Registration)

This is open to UK/Ireland graduates who have:

  • Graduated with a UK/Irish university medical degree
  • One year’s experience post-graduation
  • Full registration with GMC or IMC

Comparable Health System

This is open to doctors who:

  • Hold a primary medical degree from a university medical school listed in the Avicenna World Directory of Medical Schools
  • Have worked in a comparable health system for at least 30 hours per week during three out of the last four years before you apply and hold full registration within that system.
  • Comparable Health countries as of May 2012 are: Australia; Austria; Belgium; Canada; Czech Republic; Denmark; Finland; France; Germany; Greece; Iceland; Israel; Italy; Norway; Republic of Ireland; Singapore; Spain; Sweden; Switzerland; The Netherlands; United Kingdom and United States of America
  • Have achieved, or are exempt from, an IELTS score of 7.5. Doctors are exempt if they have worked as registered doctor in an organisation where English is the first and prime language for two continuous years, in five years prior to application, and have two senior doctors who speak English as a first language to attest to their ability.

Locum Tenens Pathway

A doctor may also be in a position to work as a specialist in New Zealand for a maximum of one year as a locum tenens specialist if holding an approved post graduate qualification from the specified countries:

  • Anaesthetics:
  • Australia, Canada, Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom, United States of America
