IMC Registration

The Medical Council protects the interests of the public when dealing with registered medical practitioners. The Council has 25 members including elected and appointed members. The members represent the range of medical specialties and teaching bodies and include lay members appointed by the Minister for Health and Children.

The principal roles of the Medical Council include:

  • Assuring the quality of undergraduate education of doctors
  • Assuring the quality of postgraduate training of specialists
  • Registration of doctors
  • Disciplinary procedures
  • Guidance on professional standards / ethical conduct

The annual retention fee for a fully registered doctor has been set at 425 from 1st July 2006.

All doctors who wish to practice in the Republic of Ireland must be registered with the Medical Council. The Council maintains two registers, the General Register of Medical Practitioners and the Register of Medical Specialists.

General Register of Medical Practitioners

There are three types of registration within the General Register of Medical Practitioners:

  • Full Registration

This allows a doctor to practice independently in any health care setting without supervision

  • Internship Registration

This allows a doctor to carry out internship training, as determined by the Medical Council, for one year in an approved hospital under consultant supervision. Doctors usually begin internship training immediately after graduation from medical school.

  • Temporary Registration

This allows non-EU doctors to be employed and to receive further training in the practice of medicine in a hospital, institution, clinic or general medical practice or in a prescribed health service setting approved of by the Council. Doctors applying for temporary registration are required to pass the Temporary Registration Assessment Scheme (TRAS) unless otherwise exempted.

Whether a doctor is entitled to apply for full, temporary or internship registration depends on their nationality and country of qualification.

Register of Medical Specialists

This is a voluntary register. Specialists appear within approved specialty divisions. Only doctors holding full registration with the Medical Council can apply for inclusion in the Register of Medical Specialists.
