FAQs

  • What are salaries like in Canada?

Doctors in permanent roles in Canada earn between CAN$250,000 and CAN$800,000, depending on their specialty. In addition, GPs (Family Physicians) working in locum roles earn around CAN$35,000 a month, depending on the location. Medical practitioners enjoy a very comfortable lifestyle as the cost of living and property prices in Canada are significantly lower than the UK and Europe (around 30% lower).

  • Will I be eligible for professional registration in Canada with my current qualifications and experience?

Each province in Canada has its own requirements for registration. The basic minimum requirements are:

    • A medical degree from any country that is listed in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED)
    • GP or specialty training that has been completed in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa, UK or USA
    • Most provinces also require completion of the Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Exam (MCCEE)
    • Authentication of medical certification by the Physicians Credentials Registry of Canada (PCRC). www.pcrc.org Some provinces require full verification before they will issue your license. Others will allow you to complete PCRC verification after starting work in Canada

See our Medical Registration page for more details.

  • Will accommodation and relocation expenses to Canada be provided?

Accommodation, transport and relocation expenses can be provided. This will depend on the province, health region and community that you work within.

  • Can I take my family with me to Canada?

Yes. Most doctors who come to work in Canada bring their families. Considered as one of the best places in the world to live, Canada gives you and your family a great opportunity to experience a different way of life and to enjoy the space and freedom of its forests, mountains, prairies, lakes, rivers and beaches. We will arrange visas for your whole family once you secure a job offer.

  • Will my spouse or children be able to work in Canada?

Yes. Spouses and common-law partners of skilled foreign workers with a work-permit may obtain a permit to work in Canada without having to qualify with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC).

  • What are Canadian schools like?

Canada spends around 8 per cent of its gross domestic product on education and has some of the best schools and colleges in the world. Full-time education is compulsory in all provinces from the ages of five, six or seven and continues until age 16 -18. Education in public primary and secondary schools is free but parents pay top-up 'student fees’ of between CAN$5 and CAN$100 per term for extra-curricular classes. Admission to public school for foreign children is dependent on the type and duration of the visa granted to their parents. Foreign families resident in Canada for a limited period often send their children to private international schools.

  • How much time should I allow from receiving a job offer to starting work in Canada?

As the processes vary so much between provinces and territories, it is best to discuss this with your Global Medics consultant.

  • Can I extend my Canadian visa?

    Yes.

  • How long can I work in Canada?

For as long as you have the right to work in the country.

  • How long is the typical employment contract in Canada?
