AMC Registration
In order to work as a Medical Practitioner in Australia you must have registration with the AMC (Australian Medical Council) and be registered with one of the Australian State Medical Boards. For full registration with the AMC you must have completed your medical degree in Australia or New Zealand or be assessed through one of the following AMC pathways:.
- Competent Authority Pathway
The Competent Authority Pathway is for International Medical Graduates applying for non-specialist positions and has completed specified training and assessment through approved overseas countries, such as: United Kingdom, Canada, United States, New Zealand and Ireland. International Medical Graduates meeting the requirements for the Competent Authority Pathways will be given
"Advanced Standing" towards the AMC Certificate. In order to get full AMC registration the International Medical Graduate will need to complete 12 months supervised training in an Australian Hospital. For further information please refer to the AMC website:

- Standard Pathway
The Standard Pathway is designed for International Medical Graduates who are not eligible for assessment under the Competent Authority Pathway or Specialist Pathways. All International Medical Graduate (IMG) applicants seeking registration through the Standard Pathway will need to pass the AMC Multiple Choice Questions (MCQ) examination. On successful completion of the MCQ exams the applicant will be granted
"Advanced Standing", which will allow the IMG to apply for Conditional State Medical registration and work in Australia under supervision. Either whilst in employment or in the home country the applicant will need to undertake the Clinical examination before they are entitle to
full AMC registration. The clinical examination waiting list can be up to 18 months.

- Specialist Pathway
To be eligible to register through the Specialist Pathway you must provide your Specialist qualifications from outside Australia or New Zealand to the Australian Medical Council (AMC) for assessment by the relevant
Specialist College in Australia. This assessment will consider whether your qualifications, skills and experience are comparable to Australian standards and will often require the candidate to attend interviews with the specified Specialist College.

- Area of Need Specialist Pathway
The Area of Need Specialist Pathway was introduced to fast-track the process for Internationally-trained Specialists whose primary medical qualifications are not recognised in Australia. Applicants who are following the Area of Need Specialist Pathway will be assessed by the relevant Specialist College against a
specific job offer which needs to be within a designated
"area of need" within Australia.

The International English Language Testing System (IELTS)
An English Language Proficiency test is required for all International Medical Graduates (IMGs) who require registration in Australia.
Exemptions may apply when the applicant can provide evidence of secondary education in either UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, USA or South Africa, where English in the native or first language.
Applicants will need to submit evidence to the relevant registration authority of competency in speaking and communicating in English as demonstrated by having completed the IELTS examination (academic module) to the following standard:
- The Board will require the applicant to have achieved a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components
- Alternative English proficiency tests that will be accepted are: a) pass in the Occupational English Test (OET), b) A pass in the Professional Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) in the United Kingdom; or c) A pass in the English language proficiency component of the New Zealand Registration Examination (NZREX)
- Results must have been obtained within 2 years prior to applying for registration
- An IELTS (or approved equivalent) Test Report Form more than two years old will be accepted as evidence of present level of ability if accompanied by proof that a candidate has actively maintained employment as a Medical Practitioner in a country where English is the native or first language such as: UK, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, USA or South Africa
Certificates of Good Standing
International Medical Graduates will require a Certificate of Good Standing from each Medical Board you have ever registered with. Note that these Certificates of Good Standing must be sent directly from the Licensing Authority to the Australian State Medical Board. You may not have these in your possession. The Medical Board in will not accept faxed copies.
